We have more Meiakane in this next re-post from my old blog. Also giving more insight in the history of the Hayatos and why they at war with the triads.
The same young monk who had ushered Ame into the Shaolin temple had arrived in the small tea room that was adjacent to the Grand master’s meeting chamber. Sitting opposite each other in silence were the Hayato siblings. Gently placing a straw mat holding a clay tea pot and two glasses with green tea leaves at the bottom the monk bobbed his head to the two women and quietly exitted the room.
Sounds of the monks chanting evening prayer was heard throughout all the different rooms and Ame closed her eyes briefly and listened to them. She did not understand the Mandarin flowing through their lips but it still gave the Yakuza child a sense of inner peace. For all the violence and reckless kills that she did in her young life, she felt that nothing could touch her and a cleansing effect washed over her entire body.
Opposite her, Meiakane adjusted in her black yukata reaching over and pouring both of them a cup of green tea, picking up her teacup and inhaling the brew licking her bottom lip with a smile. “The Shaolin monks always have the best tea leaves, I wonder if the Grand Master will allow me to take a batch back home to Japan” Ame opened her eyes and gave Mei an incredulous look before picking up her own cup and blowing over the hot liquid. Mei continued inspecting the leaves inside her cup.
Ame took a quick sip of the green tea and got comfortable on the simple cushion underneath her. Her dark brown eyes stared straight towards her older sister who calmly lifted her face and smiled back. It was the second time that Ame had since her sister smile and be so serene. Perhaps the temple was having the same effect on her as it did on the youngest Hayato. However the single question still burned in her mind.
“Why are you here Onee-chan? The contact gave the envelope to me to come here, how did you know to come to this particular Shaolin temple?” Meiakane chuckled softly before taking her first sip from her cup. Swallowing the green tea she began to speak “This has been my private mission for the past month, who would have thought that Otou-san would have asked you for assistance as well” Ame blinked surprised at this news and frowned “What are we after Mei-Mei, I am still clueless on what is the prize that Otou-san seeks”.
Sitting buddha style on her own individual cushion, Meiakane propped the teacup in her lap and clasped her hands together. The porcelain cup balancing between her calves not moving. “I’m pretty sure you’ve seen the golden lion that is on our father’s right hand every day and night” Ame pouted trying to remember the day of the Tsunami anniversary “He wasn’t wearing it at the nation’s anniversary” Meiakane nodded “That ring is our family heirloom passed down from the royal family to the first Hayato during the edo period. It is a symbol of what makes our family so important amongst the other clans. A symbol of honour, duty and importance of family”.
Ame nodded slowly, she had been taught the Hayato values since she was able to write and speak. To honour the family, blood of family was more important above anyone else, never betray the family for selfish needs. They had been implemented after the betrayal of the first Hayato son. The eldest who was motivated by his own greed for power, he had killed the first Oyabun of the Hayatos, his own father was placed on trial but escaped and fled to China. He became part of the Triads, a permanent exile.
It was this act that worried Ame about herself, for she too was wild when it came to her emotions fuelling her actions and she could see mirror images between herself and her ancestor. She was aware that Mei was staring at her hard, obviously wondering what was ticking within her younger sister’s mind. Taking another sip, a mouthful of the herbal brew Ame gestured for Mei to continue her story.
Shrugging her shoulders Meiakane continued “I managed to link it back to the Shun family. Our family’s nemesis of many years. Those Triads have taken our ring and hope to unlock the secrets of our family tree. I managed to behead the eldest son but his cunning little sister Shun Hui has retrieved the ring and taken it to the Temple of One hundred Fireflies, a Triad safehouse apparently” Meiakane trailed off as her hands clenched into fists. Frustration crossing her facial features before they softened and she gave Ame a devious smile, a smile that made Ame cringe inwardly.
“So I appoint this second stage in the mission to you. I figured its a good idea. The youngest Shun against our delightful raindrop” Ame scowled at the condesending nickname given to her and was tempted to throw the empty teacup at her sister’s big grin. She restrained herself and folded her arms tightly “Done.”
